Advocating for the Profession: An International Effort

International Internal Audit Awareness Month has no borders. Professionals from the Bahamas to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are advocating the value of internal auditing and forging strong relationships with key stakeholders.

IIA Greece Vice President of HIIA speaking at Awareness Month eventIIA–Greece, also known as the Hellenic IIA, participated for the first time in Awareness Month. Institute leaders spoke at six universities throughout May to promote the internal audit profession. They also hosted a networking event on May 14. George Pelekanakis, vice president of IIA–Greece, spoke to more than 60 members about The IIA’s Global Council 2014 and the development of the internal audit profession.

The IIA’s Bahamas chapter hosted a week of events to celebrate International Internal Audit Awareness Month. The week’s theme was “Internal Audit’s Role in Building a Better Bahamas,” which was celebrated with a Sunday church service, member luncheon, and two full-day seminars on internal controls, fraud detection, and the audit process.

Accounts and Finance Manager and Section Heads cutting the Awareness Month cakeTwo organizations in Dubai also celebrated by raising awareness of internal audit’s value within their workplace. The Internal Control Department at Union Cooperative Society invited the account and finance managers and section heads to share in a special cake to celebrate Internal Audit Awareness Month. Both the departments agreed to continue striving for professional excellence in their respective areas and to spread the word about internal audit’s importance.

Emirates Transport’s internal auditors reached out to nine teams within the organization to offer education about internal auditing, internal controls, and global studies, and distributed posters about internal audit’s objectives. They also presented awards to employees who correctly answered their month-long internal audit quiz, to those who correctly answered questions proceeding their informational lectures, and to the most effective business unit, based on recent audits.

The IIA encourages our many chapters, institutes, and members around the globe to continue spreading the word about the value internal auditing adds to organizations. Tell us how you’re celebrating the month: email and join the conversation on social media using #IIAMay.
