IA Awareness Month Celebrated Worldwide, Campaign Goes Viral

As International Internal Audit Awareness Month rolls on, The IIA’s Facebook page and other social media channels reflect numerous examples of how individuals, chapters, and Institutes are participating around the world. In the truest sense of the word, Awareness Month is centered around pride for the internal audit profession, the local community, and the men and women working hard to make sure the profession is understood and valued. It’s these efforts that make Awareness Month grow and succeed in its purpose year in and year out.
Several U.S. states received proclamations from their respective governors recognizing May as Internal Audit Awareness Month. IIA-Austin, along with Texas Governor Rick Perry awarded Caroline Beyer, vice president of Internal Audit for Capital Metro, Internal Auditor of the Year. IIA chapters in Nebraska; Virginia; the City of Sacramento, Calif.; and the Province of Manitoba, Canada — among others — also received proclamations from notable elected officials announcing May as Internal Audit Awareness Month.

Robert Berry, a Certified Internal Auditor®, took to his blog last week. “That Audit Guy” let his readership know about Awareness Month and ways they could participate. His blog offers a plethora of original content for information on internal auditing, including news articles, training courses, a question-and-answer forum, and more. And Becky Blanchard, an internal audit manager at Houston-based waste management company WCA, praised the profession on her company’s blog. Their efforts are perfect examples of individuals in action during May.

IIA-Singapore is partnering with the Asia Centre of Excellence for Internal Audit, to celebrate International Internal Audit Awareness Month.  Interviews with internal audit practitioners are posted to the ACEIA website every Friday this month. One such interview on how internal audit professionals can be “nice policemen” takes a light-hearted approach to a common misconception. IIA Institutes in Panama and Turkey also have events planned during May to recognize Awareness Month.

PJ-Lhuillier-Group.pngAwareness Month stories are spreading on social media as well! So for this month, the Twitter hashtag #IIAMay has been used more than 80 times in various tweets. A special thanks to @IIATurkey , @IIASouthAfrica, @IIAChicago, @TheIIADallas, and @BHBi_Consult for spreading The IIA’s Awareness Month messages on Twitter. Through Facebook, Jennie-Lyn Coma, who works for micro-financial company PJ Lhuillier in the Philippines, posted a picture of custom buttons she made especially for May. In her post she said, “What better way to show that you are one proud auditor than to wear it?” The bright blue buttons read “Proud to Be an Internal Auditor!” Her simple, fun idea of handing out buttons around the office shows that sometimes whimsy is the way to make a memorable impact.
