Graduate Student Wins Internal Auditor Scholarship

LAKE MARY, Fla. (July 20, 2017) — Liara Weiler, a graduate student at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, won the Internal Auditor magazine's second scholarship of 2017.

The magazine awarded Weiler, the April-May scholarship winner, US $1,000 for her essay, "Pillars of Resilience." Her winning entry was in response to the question, "What is internal audit's role in making the organization more resilient?"

The essay contest is open to undergraduate and graduate students globally. Participants must write an intuitive essay on specific internal audit subjects from essay questions tied to articles featured in Internal Auditor.

In addition to having their essays published on InternalAuditor.org, the winners and four finalists receive a one-year student membership to The IIA.

The four other finalists in the April-May essay contest are:

  • Hanna Ayangbayi, Cesag Business School – Dakar, Senegal
  • George Buliki, University of Strathclyde – Glasgow, Scotland
  • Alina Gridley, Florida Atlantic University – Boca Raton, Florida, United States
  • Mrudhula Tankasala, Wayne State University – Detroit, Michigan, United States

The February-March winner of the magazine's scholarship was Arriet Foster, a graduate student at Florida State University. Her essay, "The Long Reach of the Standards," answered the question "Why are the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing important?"

The IIA has long supported academic relations through its Internal Audit Academic Awareness Program and the Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP), which were created to encourage the development of outstanding learning opportunities for students interested in internal audit careers.
