IIA Hires Director for Future Government Audit Center

Scheduled to launch in early 2014, the Center for Government Auditing will offer specialized services to meet public sector auditors’ unique needs

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and its North American Board have approved a business plan for launching a new American Center for Government Auditing (ACGA). “With this initiative, we’re seeking to better serve public sector auditors by delivering targeted thought leadership, training, and networking opportunities developed specifically to meet the unique needs and preferences of this select group,” says IIA President and CEO Richard Chambers, whose 37-year internal audit career includes serving two decades in the public sector.

Richard-F-Chambers.pngThe government audit population in the United States comprises an estimated 100,000 auditors. “These auditors have specialized needs for education, certification, knowledge sharing, and networking,” says Chambers. “When I served as inspector general earlier in my career, I would have valued having such a program, as there’s nothing out there like this.”

Government auditors are not the first specialty group to receive a targeted program of products and services from The IIA. Currently, the professional association offers specialty group memberships for auditors working in the financial services and gaming industries. The IIA also launched an Audit Executive Center nearly three years ago to meet the specific needs of chief audit executives across industries.

Jim-P.pngTo finalize the creation of the ACGA, The IIA has hired a new director of government audit services. Palo Alto [Calif.] City Auditor James Pelletier will leave his current post and begin work at The IIA’s global headquarters in Altamonte Springs, Fla., next month.

Pelletier has more than 15 years of internal audit experience in public and private sectors. He previously served as chief auditor for the county of San Diego and has been an active IIA volunteer for several years, including serving as a member of the International Public Sector Committee.

“James has the right combination of experience and enthusiasm to oversee the development of this valuable new program for government auditors,” says Chambers. “We look forward to welcoming him to IIA headquarters and strengthening our support for public sector auditors, who serve in a very demanding role as the guardians of public trust.”

The ACGA is scheduled to launch in early 2014.
