GAM 2017 – Thank You for Joining Us!
With more than 1,200 audit leaders present, The IIA's 2017 General Audit Management (GAM) Conference proved yet again that GAM is "the essential experience for CAEs" offering a forum to discuss issues, share ideas, and identify solutions to enhance performance.
On Sunday, Audit Executive Center® (AEC) members enjoyed exclusive pre-conference offerings, including a deep-dive discussion on the just-released Pulse of Internal Audit, a presentation on board governance in today's environment by Friso van der Oord, director of research for the National Association of Corporate Directors, and an opportunity to hear The IIA's CEO and President Richard Chambers' insights from his new book, Trusted Advisors: Key Attributes of Outstanding Internal Auditors.
Greg Grocholski, vice president and chief audit executive at SABIC, wasted no time in meeting attendee expectations with his opening keynote session, Auditing Strategically to Build Credibility, during which he discussed how real participation and acceptance around the C-suite table, being invited to strategic discussions, is an earned outcome. The session explored what has worked to earn that credibility.
Next, delegates were invited to a panel session, Stakeholder Expectations, moderated by Paul Sobel, vice president and chief audit executive for Georgia-Pacific. Panelists, Angela Witzany, chair of The IIA Global Board of Directors; Larry Harrington, vice president of internal audit at Raytheon Company; and Brian Christensen, executive vice president of global internal audit at Protiviti used the findings from the latest CBOK Stakeholder Studies to explore how CAEs can better achieve desired results.
Day two continued the conference theme, "Fostering Risk Resilience," with an Open Discussion With the Honorable Barbara Hackman Franklin: How Leaders in Internal Audit Can Be Most Effective Supporting Management and the Board. Facilitated by Richard Chambers, attendees explored the ways internal audit's role is evolving as it relates to how to support both the organization and the board as a trusted agent in this time of challenge, change, and transition.
Conference delegates continued their educational excursion with six distinct tracks interwoven through the 50 general and concurrent sessions. Additional keynotes included Storytelling With Data, presented by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic, author and founder, Story Telling With Data; and Transition Resilience: It's Not Just About Managing Change, a true crowd pleaser presented by Keith Wyche, corporate transformation leader and best-selling author.
Everybody wanted to be "In Conversation With…" Back by popular demand, these sessions enabled delegates to submit inquiries in advance via the conference app and ask questions and engage in discussion with speakers, resulting in a truly interactive experience.
As always, networking opportunities at GAM were second-to-none with a multitude of activities planned throughout the conference. We thank our sponsors and exhibitors for making these great networking events available to our delegates.
As a reminder, materials are available for download via The IIA's conference app, from those presenters who made them avaialble. Want to hear more about what conference delegates have to say? Join the conversation on social media – #IIAGAM ‒ and check out the full photo gallery.
