Writing Actionable Audit Observations and Laser Focused Reports

If audit reports aren’t clear and don’t deliver actionable suggestions, what good are they? A well written report with insightful observations helps the audit client work to achieve business objectives and is easily understood by senior leaders and the audit committee. Listen as we discuss the skills needed (critical thinking, the 5 C’s) to create a strong report with a built-in communication plan during an audit engagement so there are no surprises. These tips conform and align with The IIA’s Standards, the IIA Competency Framework, and are useful for both traditional and Agile audits.

Shawna Flanders has over 30 years of audit, risk, cyber, project, and process experience in the financial services sector and brings her real-world experience to her role as director of IT curriculum at The IIA. Flanders has taught technology-related topics throughout North America as well as internationally for over a decade. She has presented at numerous conferences and taught dozens of seminars, webinars, and custom in-house training courses for both business and technology auditors since 2007. Flanders has conducted over 100 ISACA certification review courses and was part of the CRISC development team. She also designed multiple audit-related courses and contributed and/or reviewed multiple audit-related publications. Flanders has completed certificate programs in risk management and Six Sigma Green & Lean/Black Belt, and has earned the Life Operations Management Association (LOMA) Associate of Customer Service designation.

Debi Roth has more than 15 years of professional audit and tax experience in various industries, including health care, transportation, manufacturing, and banking. She served as The IIA’s staff liaison to the International Internal Audit Standards Board, the Professional Responsibility and Ethics Committee, and the IPPF Relook Task Force that resulted in the 2017 Revised Standards or “Red Book.” Prior to joining The IIA, she was enterprise risk manager for WellCare Health Plans. Before that, she was the manager of internal audit for AirTran Airways for more than five years.
